Lectotype : Lectotype (designated here): First plant, top left, of the sample labelled “Cephaloceraton gymnocarpum (Genn.!), Caprera”, Maggio 1861, Gennari (TO ex herb. Gennari p.p., first plant, top left, on the sheet!). – The sheet with the original material of Isoetes gymnocarpa is a mixture. Of its two plants, one has phyllopodia with long lateral spine-like teeth as is typical of I. histrix, the other (our lectotype) is congruent with the protologue in this respect. Indeed, Gennari himself reports that his new species grows together with the similar I. histrix. However, contrary to the original description, in the lectotype specimen the velumis complete, as already found by Braun (1864) when studying the I. gymnocarpa sample he had received from Gennari. In the I. histrix complex, presence or absence of the velum does not seem to be a reliable diagnostic feature: Rolleri and Prada (2007: 218) indeed report that “en I. histrix el velo suele ser completo pero occasionalmente falta en macrosporofilos”.
