Distribution : Répartition curieuse, posant question; connue de la région de Cayenne, de quelques localités du sud de la Guyane (notamment inselbergs) et de deux localités du Suriname (notamment Voltzberg) (GBIF). Elle semble remplacée au Brésil par Varronia multispicata (Cham.) Borhidi 1988.

Taxonomie : D'après I.M. Johnston (J. Arnold Arbor., 16(1): 42-43, 43-44. 25/01/1935): "[Cordia tomentosa (Lam.) Roem. & Schult. 1819] is most closely related to C. multispicata Cham. of eastern Brazil, from which it differs in having the calyx coarsely strigose or tomentose all over, rather than nearly or quite glabrous. [...] [Cordia multispicata Cham. 1829] which has been much collected about the mouth of the Amazon, particularly in the vicinity of Pará, is clearly related to C. tomentosa of French and Dutch Guiana. Collecting on the Brazilian coast north of the Amazon will no doubt reveal the presence of the species in that region and possibly may produce forms transitional to C. tomentosa as well. Cordia multispicata seems to differ from C. tomentosa chiefly in its calyx which tends to be entirely glabrous and evidently resinous-granulate below the sborter nearly deltoid lobes. In C. tomentosa the calyx-lobes are distinctly more elongate, being narrowly triangular, and have more elongate tips. The calyx-tube in the Guianan plant is hairy all over. ln fact, except for the free lobe-tips of the calyx, C. multispicata is more suggestive of C. Schomburgkii than of C. tomentosa."
Le type de Cordia cremersii Feuillet 2003 est une variante de Varronia tomentosa Lam. 1792 à épis particulièrement courts sur inselberg. Chez V. tomentosa, la longueur de l'inflorescence est très variable et dépend peut-être des conditions du milieu.

Type : "... Ex herb. Jussiaei." [protologue]. "Cette plante a été observée dans l'herbier du citoyen Jussieu. Sa patrie est inconnue. ♄. (V s.)" [Poir. in Lam., Encycl., 4(1): 264-265. 09/02/1797]. "Habitat in Cayennâ. Obs. M. Lamark ignoroit d'où provenoit cette plante qui, par ses épis à fleurs pressées les unes contre les autres, constitue une espèce très-remarquable; j'en ai trouvé dans l'herbier de M. Richard des échantillons cueillis à Cayenne, par lui-même." [Desv., J. Bot., 1(5): 268. 02/1809].

D'après I.M. Johnston (J. Arnold Arbor., 16(1): 42. 25/01/1935): "The type of Varronia tomentosa in the Lamarck Herbarium is labeled as coming from Jussieu and is devoid of any geographic data. It consists of a leaf and a fragment of inflorescence. These, however, evidently represent the much collected plant of the vicinity of Cayenne which is treated here." Dans la mesure où Aublet a collecté cette espèce (I.M. Johnston, J. Arnold Arbor., 16(1): 43. 25/01/1935; voir P00777824) et dans la mesure où l'on sait que Aublet a légué des spécimens à B. Jussieu, il semble probable que le type soit en réalité un fragment issu de cette collecte.
