Date de publication : Ann. Sci. Nat., Bot., sér. 4, 10: [110-]115-116[-126]. 1858. Voir aussi Tulasne in Fl. Bras., 4(1): 401-402, tab. 103-104. 1863 [10/07/1863, fide TL-2, 5538, voir p. 335].
Taxonomie : "G. leyboldii and “G. woodsonianum” (G. leyboldii var. woodsonianum Markgr.) are sisters. “Gnetum woodsonianum”, endemic to Colombia and Panama (Markgraf, 1965), is currently considered synonymous with G. urens (WCSP, 2014). Our results do not support such a treatment but are more in line with Markgraf’s (1965) opinion that “G. woodsonianum” is a variety of G. leyboldii. However, Markgraf (1965) reports morphological differences between the taxa: G. leyboldii has broadly elliptic leaves, which are smooth and shiny and has inflorescences with 3–4 whorls, whereas the leaves of “G. woodsonianum” are elliptic and not shiny, due to the occurrence of dense subepidermal fibres, and inflorescences have only 1–2 whorls (Markgraf, 1965). Considering these differences, “G. woodsonianum” and G. leyboldii could probably both be treated as species." (Hou et al., Taxon, 64(2): 239-253. 2015).
Type : "3. Gnetum Leyboldii Tul., in Martii Fl. Bras. (fasc. nondum edito), um habitus adumbrat. et fig. analyt. - Gnetum dioicum Friderico Leybold, in Herb. Martiano et Vindob. (pro parte, planta scil. antherifera.). [...] Viget in sylvis primaevis, udis, Brasiliae borealis, circa Egam, Japuram et Nogueiram provinciae dictae Fluminis nigri; novembri florens, decembrique et januario fructiferum, ill. Martio occurrit. (Herb. Monac. et Mart.) Gnetum dioicum Leybold. typum hunc simul et sequentem, fortassis haud immerito, amplectitur; flores autem utriusque sexus, cl. Leyboldi pace, in verticillis praecedentis una generantur, praetereaque bene multa discrimina hos inter verticillos androgynos contiguos, et verticillos mere foemineos distantesque Gneti amazonici nostri, quod ad bractearum et nodi floriferi structuram attinet, animadvertuntur. Flores feminei Gneti Leyboldi post masculos explicantur; imperfecti tantum suppetunt." [protologue].
