Taxonomie : Bentham (in DC., Prodr. 10: 382. 1846) est le premier à avoir synonymisé Matourea pratensis Aubl. 1775 sous Stemodia foliosa Benth. 1840. Il note par contre que le "Vandellia pratensis de Vahl" (basé sur M. pratensis) correspond en revanche à Beyrichia villosa Benth. 1835 (= Achetaria erecta (Spreng.) Wettst. 1891).
Dans l'Index Kewensis (Index Kew. 2(3): 175.1894) Matourea pratensis Aubl. 1775 apparait par erreur à deux entrées(!): (1) M. pratensis renvoit à Stemodia pusilla Benth. 1845 (Index Kew. 2(4): 987. 1895); (2) M. guianensis (nom invalide se référant à la légende erronée de la planche originale "M. Guyannensis") renvoit à Stemodia foliosa Benth. 1840 (Index Kew. 2(4): 987. 1895). Cette étrange synonymie est le fruit d'une erreur de lecture du Prodrome (Bentham in DC., Prodr. 10: 381-382. 1846) où S. pusilla et S. foliosa Benth. 1840 se suivent au niveau d'un saut de page [l'Index Kewensis aurait du écrire S. foliosa au lieu de pusilla!].
Sans avoir vu le type d'Aublet et suivant les idées de Bentham, C.C.Cowan (Phytologia 75(4): 309. 1993) recombinera M. pratensis dans le genre Stemodia, et appliquera ce binôme à S. foliosa Benth. Ce n'est qu'avec la redécouverte récente du type que cette mésapplication vieille de près de 2 siècles a pu être réalisée: Matourea pratensis en réalité un Achetaria, en témoignent la description, la planche originale, et le type, mais encore la couleur de la fleur, l'écologie, sa fréquence autour de Cayenne, son usage et son nom vernaculaire! Malheureusement Matourea Aubl. 1775 est prioritaire sur Achetaria Cham. & Schltdl. 1827, et Matourea pratensis Aubl. 1775 sur l'ensemble des basionymes des espèces d'Achetaria!...
On notera avec intérêt le commentaire prémonitoire de Souza & Giuletti (2009): "Stemodia foliosa Benth. foi referida por Turner & Cowan (1993) como sinônimo de Stemodia pratensis (Aubl.) C.P.Cowan, cujo basiônimo é Matourea pratensis Aubl., espécie descrita para a região das Guianas e cuja identidade até este trabalho não havia sido interpretada com precisão. No trabalho de Aublet (1775), esta espécie é ilustrada como possuindo cálice tetrâmero e estames com anteras paralelas entre si, características ausentes em Stemodia e que seriam mais compatíveis com o encontrado em Achetaria. Assim, tal sinonimização não foi aqui aceita."

Type : "On trouve cette plante communément dans les [t]erreins humides de l'île de Caïenne, & même au bord des savanes qui sont auprès de la ville où elle est en fleur presque toute l'année. Elle est regardée comme un très bon vulnéraire: on l'applique écrasée, ou on se sert de sa décoction. Cette plante est nommée BASILIC SAUVAGE par les Créoles." [protologue].
Guyane française, Aublet s.n. (HT: S10-25974 [in hb. Swartz, ex hb. Banks]).
D'après G. Léotard (obs. pers. 14/08/2017): le spécimen S10-25974 est indiscutablement le type de Matourea pratensis. (1) il n'y a pas de doutes possibles sur le collecteur [au verso est indiqué "[Herb. Montinii] Specimen e collect Aublet, misit Gener. Baron. Dns Banks, a: 1782"]. (2) la plante s'accorde parfaitement avec la planche originale (dont elle est sans doute la source). En revanche la planche S10-35421 [portant l'indication "Vandellia pratensis Willd. e Coll. Aublet e Guiane" de la main de Swartz], également attribuée à Aublet, est peut-être plutôt une collecte de Swartz [comparée par lui au spécimen au nom de Willdenow et à la collecte d'Aublet]!
Selon Howard (1983) et Le Strat (2014), le type n'était pas localisé, ce qui est finalement logique puisque Banks l'avait envoyé à Swartz.

Type : D'après Colletta et al. (Taxon 69(6): xx. 11/08/2020): "Lectotype (designated here): “GUIAN”, J.B.C.F. Aublet s.n. (S No. 10-35421!; isolectotypes: LINN-HS No. 1080.1!, S No. 10-25974!, UPS-THUNB No. 14440!).
Turner & Cowan (1993), when publishing the combination Stemodia pratensis, did not cite a type specimen or propose a formal lectotypification. Rather, they argued that, lacking such material, the original illustration (Aublet, 1775:  t. 259) could serve as an adequate type. We disagree with this because the illustration is inconsistent with both the description of Aublet (1775) and the type specimens, because it represents the stamens as being exserted, the corolla tube not occluded, and the anterior pair of anthers not adherent. This disagreement is possibly due to a mixture of materials at the time of drawing (Howard, 1983), and therefore the illustration should not be used as a type in this case, even if the type specimens were missing.
According to Stafleu& Cowan (1976) and Howard (1983), Aublet’s specimens are found mainly at BM, LINN, and P, and also at BR, C, F, LIV, MO, S, UPS, and W. After consulting digital databases and direct contact with the respective curators of those herbaria,we located specimens of M. pratensis that can be attributed to Aublet at LINN, S, and UPS.
At S, sheet S10-35421 bears a label with "Didynamia Angiospermia Matourea" written in Aublet’s hand and, at the bottom of the sheet, a handwritten annotation (probably by Johan Emanuel Wikström) stating "Coll. Aubl. Guian", among other annotations. On the reverse of S10-25974, there is an annotation in Lars Jonnason Montin’s hand stating, "Habitat in America meridionalis" and "Specimen e collect: Aublet: misit Gener: Baron: Dans Banks, a: 1782". We select the first specimen (S10-35421; Fig. 1) as lectotype because the label is written in Aublet’s hand and includes a name and location that are consistent with the protologue. On LINN-HS No. 1080.1, at the bottom of the specimen, there is an annotation in Aublet’s handwriting stating "Matourea guyanensis Aubl". On UPS-THUNB No. 14440, there is an annotation stating "Matourea Aublet Vandellia?" in Aublet’s handwriting. On the reverse of this sheet, "e Guiana, Aublet" and "Sipanea pratensis [scratched]" is written in Aublet’s hand. There is another sheet at UPS (UPS-THUNB No. 14441) that is annotated as "Maturea?" (by an unknown author, not Aublet), but the specimen belongs to the Rubiaceae and could possibly be type material of Sipanea pratensis Aubl."
