2023): "Three subspecies are currently recognized within
Ragala sanguinolenta and are likely to represent distinct species. A phylogenetic analysis, including multiple accessions of each taxon, should be undertaken in an attempt to resolve this problem."

2023): "All type specimens of
R. sanguinolenta, except the one in Paris to which Pierre (1891) referred in his protologue, lack the number “42”, but have large leaves and fruit, corresponding to the material at P and therefore most likely are part of the same gathering. Three collections by Melinon (BM000952597, V0360295F, US 00067565) are of young, sterile, and smaller leaves, and probably comprise another gathering, so they are not regarded as part of the original material."
