Description originale : ​21. Zygopetalum brachystalis Rchb. fil.:
Foliis lanceis acuto acuminatis inferne valide trinerviis, pedunculo elongato paucivaginato vaginis distantibus, racemo elongato, bracteis minutissimis, mento bene evoluto, sepalis oblongis acutis, lateralibus latioribus, tepalis ligulatis acutis, labello brevi unguiculato a basi minute cordata rhombeo flabellato obtusangulo, callo hippocrepico plicato sulcato in basi, columna brevissima. Flores illis Maxillariae rufescentis aequales. Ins. Trinitatis.

Type : Trinidad, Tanapuna-Piarco, Aripo savannah, 08/07/1848, fleurs. H. Crüger s.n. (LT: K000588992 [ex hb. Hook.; lectotype désigné par T.E.C. Meneguzzo et al., Phytotaxa, 238(1): 24. 09/12/2015*]; ILT: ​GOET013910 [ex hb. Griseb.; sub Cyrtopodium cristatum Lindl.], W-R 33737 [ex hb. Rchb.f.; illustration]).
* "Rolfe (1914) was in doubt about the type of Zygopetalum brachystalix, whether it was the specimen collected in Trinidad by Purdie (here identified as K000880370 and P00447798) or Crüger (K000588992), both in the same area because Reichenbach (1863b) only cited “Ins. Trinitatis” in the protologue. In a specimen from the Reichenbach herbarium (W-R 33737), there is an illustration noted as “Sav Aripo 1847; Trinit Crueger”, which agrees except for the date, but it must be the same specimen as deposited at K. We consider the illustration as part of the original material (McNeill et al. 2012: art. 9.3) and Crüger’s collection as the most appropriate lectotype."
