Taxonomie : Genre circumtropical, comprenant 8 espèces de palétuviers et constitué de deux lignées allopatriques anciennes ([10-]38?[-50] MA, fide Tripp & MacDade
2014) et bien distinctes morphologiquement. Récemment Cornejo (
2020) a considéré que ces éléments étaient suffisant pour séparer au rang générique la lignée néotropicale (
Hilairanthus Tiegh. 1898, 3 spp.) de la lignée paléotropicale (
Avicennia L. 1753 s. str., 5 spp.). Cette position a, peu après, été explicitement rejetée dans la nouvelle classification des Acanthaceae de Tripp
et al. (
2021)*. Ces deux lignées sont ici reconnues au rang de section, mais mériteraient probablement d'être élevées au rang de sous-genres (noms non disponibles à ce jour).
