Description originale : Of the
Cyrtopodiums
, the ornaments of our native natural savannahs, the loveliest by far is
C. Grisebachii, Rolfe (
C. cristatum
Griseb. [Fl. Brit. W. I., (6-7):
630. 10/1864, fide TL-2,
2181]), which the Kew authorities have lately identified for me. It much resembles a grass when out of bloom, and the lovely white blossoms with one lemon-yellow stain on the lip are like small flowers of
Diacrium bicornutum. The flowers last a long time in beauty, and the plant is only to be found in one part of Trinidad, and there it is fast disappearing owing to the advancing tide of cultivation.
Type : Trinidad, Tanapuna-Piarco, Aripo savannah, 12/05/1895, fleurs. Species of terrestrial orchid, said to be
Cyrtopodium cristatum. White flower with lemon yellow crest on lip. Fine orchid. T.I. Patter s.n. (LT:

Cyrtopodium grisebachii
was chosen from among the two specimens deposited at K before the protologue and identified by Rolfe."
