Statut biogéographique : D'après Manning (Brittonia, 12(1):
[1-]10-11[-26]. 1960, sub
Juglans venezuelensis W.E.Manning 1960): "Walnuts collected in French Guiana by Lemée (1955, pp. 493-494) were called by him
J. brasiliensis (
J. australis)
; he stated that the nuts were striate with ribs rounded. I have seen
two fruits collected by Lemée, both loaned by the Paris Museum. Both
fruits have very thick husks, resembling those of
J. nigra. The two nuts are quite dissimilar, and possibly represent two different collections. Neither is truly striate, as in
J. brasiliensis (
J. australis). One of the nuts, from a fruit not opened by Lemée. is very sharply ridged, with no definite ribs, almost exactly as in
J. nigra (or
J. soratensis) and might be cultivated
J. nigra. The other is similar in size and markings to
J. venezuelensis (or
J. jamaicensis)
with numerous longitudinal ridges or ribs, which are rather narrow,
moderately high, and mostly flat-topped with sharp edges; the seed
cavity is rather large. The leaves, and records of the specific locality
of Lemée's collection were lost in Paris during the German occupation
in World War II. Lemée writes: "Le fruit serait plutôt originaire de
l'Orapu ou des régions de l'Oyapoc où j'ai séjourné." There may be
involved here one or two native species or cultivated tree(s), or even a
hybrid."
