Diagnose : • Description: Subalpine fescue of the Great crest of the HautesVosges, from Hohneck to Grand Ballon (alt.
1 200 to 1 400 m), forming ± densely cespitose tufts on the rocks usually < 30 (40) cm high, or along stony paths
eroded by trampling – stem length [1025 (40)] cm, not tomentose at the top under panicle, scabrous to scabridule
on the angles – sheath glabrous, smooth, open to the base – panicle < 6 cm [(3) 46 (8)], not or little exceeded by the
length of leaves, with short branches, scabrous to spinular on the angles – tiller leaves fairly rigid, ± erect, apex
acute ± pungent and anthocyanin, scabrous to scabridules at least in the upper ⅓ – plant green to glaucous, ±
pruinose, with elliptical to obovalopolygonal croos section of [(0.45) 0.50.7 (0.8)] mm in diameter, sometimes
asymmetric (see drawings Appendix 1, dichotomy 28) – sclerenchyma in continuous ring, arranged in [(0) 12 (3)]
layers of cells – (5) 7 veins – one rib and two furrows, sclerenchyma cells on mid rib absent – spikelet [(5.2) 5.56.5
(7.2)] mm, usually strongly anthocyanin, violet to black purple colouration – lemma [(3.5) 44.5 (5)] mm long,
pubescent to scabropubescent on the back – awn [(1) 1.52 (2.5)] mm – abaxial epidermal cells ± elliptical –
bulliform cells discrete to obsolete – sparse, shorthaired, smooth trichoma [(8) 1230 (43)] µm – tetraploid species
[2n ≈ 4x] by flow cytometry [FCM, cf. PŠ (20162020)].
