Distribution : "Endemic to Grande Terre, New Caledonia.
Lastreopsis abscondita is known with certainty from just two sites (but see Notes): the Aoupinié peak in Province Nord and Plateau de Dogny in Province Sud (Figure 3). Both sites are known hotspots for uncommon species (Wulff et al. 2013)."

Etymologie : "The epithet
abscondita is the feminine nominative for the Latin
absconditus, meaning concealed or hidden (Stearn1978). This references the superficial similarity of
Lastreopsis abscondita to other New Caledonian ferns (see Recognition section), and also that this large ground fern has gone unrecognised despite its local abundance at Plateau de Dogny, which is one of the most popular forest walks in New Caledonia."
