| - The study used 2066 acanthocephalans collected mainly off the coast of the South Shetlands Islands and on type specimens of 3 spp. described by Leiper and Atkinson 1914. M. campbeli (Leiper et Atkinson, 1914) is described. The main diagnostic characters include the proboscis length in males 536-609 .mu.m (mean 575 .mu.m) and in females 643-676 .mu.m (mean 658 .mu.m), hook formula (13-15 .times. 8-9/10) and embryophores (106-148 .times. 29-37 .mu.m (mean 135 .times. 33 .mu.m)). M rennicki (Leiper et Atkinson, 1914) comb. nov. [Echinorhynchus rennicki Leiper et Atkinson, 1914] is redescribed and re-evaluated; E. debenhami Leiper et Atkinson, 1914 is a synonym. The main diagnostic characters include the proboscis length (in males 298-357 .mu.m, in females 305-417 .mu.m) hook formula (12 .times. 6) and embryophores (79-92 .times. 20-25 .mu.m (mean 85.5 .times. 22 .mu.m)). M. johnstoni sp. nov. is described. The main diagnostic characters include the proboscis length in males 426-554 .mu.m (mean 476 .mu.m) and in females 486-559 .mu.m (mean 533 .mu.m), hook formula (13-16 .times. 6-7) and embryophores 88-108 .times. 20-25 .mu.m (mean 97 .times. 22 .mu.m). M. dalmori sp. nov. is described with the main diagnostic characters as follows: proboscis length in males 301-402 .mu.m (men 356 .mu.m) and in females 333-440 .mu.m (mean 385 .mu.m), hook formula 13-16 .times. 5 and embryophores 97-124 .times. 23-30 .mu.m (mean 111 .times. 26 .mu.m).
